Where do we install StresStimulus? I want to test both live web server and the web server in our offices, but the bottleneck will be the bandwidth between where StresStimulus is installed and the web server. Can you please advise.

Typically, StresStimulus is installed on a separate machine connected to the LAN where your Web server is. It gives the maximum available bandwidth of a local network connection to your load testing traffic. This approach should work to load test your Web server in the office.

As far as your live web server, assuming it is hosted and you do not have access to its network:  First, you can try to load test it from any machine with a fast connection to the Internet to determine if the network is really a bottleneck in this case. To find this out, check StresStimulus performance metrics, specifically:

  • how the network time compares to overall response times

and

  • how the consumed upload /download bandwidth compares to your available Internet connection bandwidth.

If the network is not a bottleneck, but the web server is, then the results of your load test are adequate.

If however the network is a bottleneck, then for a realistic load testing you would need either a faster Internet connection or more test machines or both. In this case, you may consider installing StresStimulus on several machines in more than one location, or on Amazon EC2 instances. Check these 2 posts with some information how to do that:
