There are many related documents and white papers dedicated to this topic. We particularly recommend Performance Testing Guidance for Web Applications by Microsoft because it is very comprehensive and detailed (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb924376.aspx ). While it was published a while ago, the fundamentals of performance testing did not change much since that time. Our goal with StresStimulus is to provide functionality that enables to practice such methodology.
