Attach an external SQL server

We would like to attach an external SQL server to our StresStimulus to avoid hitting the 4GB storage limit of embedded SQL CE.
Is there any recommended version of SQL server that we should use for this?

StresStimulus supports SQL Server 2012 and later, so you can use its support or version.
